Care Home Water Garden
A peaceful, naturalistic water garden designed for relaxation, scent and year-round enjoyment
The aim of this project was to create a calm, peaceful space where residents could relax, spend time outdoors and enjoy a wide variety of plants and flowers. Although ornamental in structure, the garden was imagined as a soft, naturalistic landscape, developed and refined over time as the planting matured. Good aftercare was built into the design from the beginning, ensuring the garden would continue to thrive well into the future.
At the heart of the space is an informal pond with waterfalls and a stone fountain, surrounded by a rich mix of aquatic plants including water lilies, water hawthorn and oxygenators. The margins are planted with yellow iris, Japanese primulas, white aquatic lobelia and water mint, giving movement, scent and seasonal colour.
A circular Indian stone seating area sits beside a hexagonal pergola, planted with climbers such as wisteria, star jasmine, everlasting sweet pea and variegated honeysuckle. Two favourite David Austin roses — Gertrude Jekyll and The Generous Gardener — add fragrance and structure, supported by a large selection of herbaceous perennials and shrubs. Globe-master and Christophii alliums are interplanted for dramatic late spring interest.
Among the highlights are two beautifully scented phlox varieties, Eva Cullum and Bright Eyes, both capable of filling the garden with sweet perfume on a warm summer day. The combination of planting and water attracts an impressive variety of wildlife — bees, butterflies, damselflies, dragonflies and many bird species.
The pergola offers a cool, shaded retreat on hot afternoons, while the hand-made York stone seating provides a sunny vantage point for enjoying the fountain on cooler days. Throughout the garden, the gentle sound of running water, together with the scent, colour and movement of the planting, creates a restorative environment that supports the wellbeing and mental health of residents and visitors alike.
