Victorian Rose Garden
A classic walled rose garden — handcrafted with traditional brickwork and timeless charm
This project involved creating a traditional Victorian-style walled rose garden, built with a strong architectural backbone and detailed, handcrafted brickwork. More than 11,000 bricks were laid in the classic English bond pattern, giving the garden authenticity, strength and a beautifully traditional appearance.
The site sloped significantly from east to west, with a two-metre drop down to a tennis court. The first stage was the construction of a main retaining wall to level the entire garden, providing a stable base for all the features to follow.
Six large brick piers were built and finished with bespoke capping stones, with the main garden steps positioned at the east end. A central Indian sandstone path leads through the space, opening out into a circular seating area with a freestanding water feature, adding both sound and focal interest.
At the heart of the garden stands a central brick pergola, fitted with garden lighting to create a warm, atmospheric feel in the evenings. To complete the Victorian character, two handmade bespoke gates were commissioned, adding authenticity and a sense of craftsmanship to the entrance.
Planting is centred around mixed shrub roses, chosen for their scent and traditional beauty, with climbers trained over the pergola to soften the brickwork and complete the romantic, period feel of the garden.
