Courtyard Garden

A transformed space — from overgrown vegetable plot to a secure, elegant garden link

This courtyard began life as an old vegetable garden with tired sleeper planters that had become overgrown. It now forms an important transition space, connecting the water garden to the rear enclosed garden and summer house, while also improving security and access around the property.

By introducing new fencing and a secure gate, the area now provides better privacy and protection for the rear of the home, while feeling open, tidy and inviting.

The paving is laid in buff-brown Indian sandstone, complemented by Chailey first bricks used for the brick piers, walling and edging. Close-board fencing frames the space and gives it structure.

Five large containers provide strong architectural planting, featuring:

  • Green and purple-leaved Canna lilies

  • Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’

  • Pittosporum ‘Dark Diva’

A reclaimed water tank acts as a striking planter, filled with Santa Barbara daisies and a beautifully scented star jasmine.

The result is a low-maintenance, secure and beautifully composed courtyard, creating a smooth and attractive link between the different parts of the garden.
